Cinderford Match Report

Cinderford 51 Chipping Sodbury 0

On Sunday, Cinderford U14s faced the challenging prospect of playing two full matches back to back but came out strongly to win both matches comfortably. In their first match, their final Group stage match in this year’s county cup competition, Cinderford ran in nine tries to register a 51-0 home victory over Chipping Sodbury. This was followed almost immediately by another nine try haul to beat a visiting tour side from Oxford RFC by 55-5. This second match was a fixture clash as a result of the original Chipping Sodbury cup fixture being postponed in January due to bad weather. Thankfully, both matches were played in bright weather on the Dockham Road main pitch.

Cinderford got off to flying start in their opener against Chipping Sodbury, with Tom Ward going over in the corner in only the second minute. Shortly after the restart, some aggressive work by Cinderford’s forwards won turn over ball from Chipping Sodbury and the ball was popped out to Ward, who embarked on a stunning strike from 70 meters out, to firstly outpace and round the opposition defence on the outside before cutting back infield and scoring at the posts.

Cinderford scrum half Rhys Gardner snagged his opposition number at a Chipping Sodbury scrum and Matt Hawkins struck from the blindside flank to steal the loose ball on the floor and offload infield to openside team mate, Sam Baker, who made good ground before linking up with outside half Liam Littleton. Littleton then fired a sharp flat pass to Jim Buffry who drew in the defence before offloading to Luke Kell on his outside. Kell spotted a gap on the outside and accelerated around to score from 20-meters out. Tom Ward then claimed a first half hat-trick with only fifteen minutes on the clock, to finish off another excellent passage of play by Cinderford. The final 10-minutes of the half remained scoreless and Cinderford took a comfortable 24-0 lead going into the break.

Ridler ripped the ball from a tackled player on the floor and passed infield to Sam Morse, who straightened the opposition defence and sent Adam Briginshaw away on the right wing. Briginshaw ran out of space just five metes short and was bundled into touch but, Jake Bonser then stole the Chipping Sodbury lineout and crashed through for a try, taking the score to 41-0. From another turn over, Cinderford showed great handling in working the ball across the full width of the park to Jack Richards on the left wing, where Richards dropped his shoulder and drove through two tacklers to go over in the corner for an unconverted try to make it 46-0 to Cinderford.

Cinderford’s man of the match was Jason Walding, who stood out for his strong direct running style that significantly troubled the opposition defence throughout the match.
