Lydney's miserable weekend began with a 10-3 defeat at home to Cinderford United in the Merit Table on Friday night.

The first-half was scrappy with very few scoring opportunities.

The introduction of Joe Gittins-Jones enabled Cinderford to take control with some punishing rolling mauls.

The opening score followed a Cinderford scrum near the halfway line.

The ball went through several pairs of hands before Lloyd Stapleton beat several defenders and handed the ball back to the pack.

Skipper Sean Lynn shot through a gap for a deserved score.

Lydney won a penalty in the dying moments of the first-half which Tony Wicks slotted at the second attempt, after the referee had ordered a retake.

In the second period defences again cancelled one another out. Both teams missed penalties and the game could have gone either way.

Ten minutes from the end though, with the Lydney pack looking tired, Cinderford turned the screw. Owen Evans was held up short after a good break by Andy King. The ball was recycled and Lynn chipped over the top for Jed Hooper to run onto, gather and score.

Hooper had a fine match, as did full-back Pete Towers and young prop Chris Bundy.

For Lydney, Tony Wicks was the pick, using his side-step to great effect.
