Luctonians 15 – Cinderford 11

Cinderford produced a determined display in testing conditions at Mortimer Park but were narrowly edged out by second-placed Luctonians in a fiercely contested encounter.

The visitors made a positive start, opening the scoring inside four minutes when Jack Condliffe slotted an early penalty. Luctonians responded swiftly, however, with Jack Goodwin touching down from the base of a driving maul to give the hosts the advantage.

Heavy conditions made free-flowing rugby difficult, and much of the first half was defined by physical exchanges and strong defensive organisation from both sides. Cinderford remained composed and regained the lead after 29 minutes when Condliffe added his second penalty, sending the visitors into the interval with a narrow 6–5 advantage.

The second half brought fresh challenges. Goodwin struck again for the home side, weaving his way over for his second try, before Rob Aikman added another to stretch Luctonians’ lead to 15–6.

Cinderford refused to relent and continued to press despite limited attacking opportunities. Their persistence was rewarded in the closing stages when Condliffe finished off a well-worked move to cross for a try, securing a valuable and deserved losing bonus point for the visitors.

Director of Rugby Clive Stuart-Smith reflected on the contest:

“We knew exactly what Luctonians would bring; a physical, direct game that would test our resolve. Playing with the conditions in the first half, we were not short of attacking opportunities. We created multiple chances to score but our execution at key moments let us down, particularly when in their 22m.

The second half proved a different challenge — we had to defend for the majority and had few opportunities in the attacking zone. We did score a fantastic team try at the end of the game to show what we are capable of, importantly taking home a deserved losing bonus point. Ultimately, we were disappointed about the final result.”

While frustrated not to have converted first-half pressure into more points, Cinderford will take encouragement from their resilience and defensive effort against one of the division’s strongest sides.
