Match Report: Cinderford 7 – Pontypool 26
Cinderford fell to a 26–7 defeat against Welsh Super Rugby side Pontypool, but there were plenty of positives to take from a spirited performance at the official opening of the new 3G pitch, now renamed Bell Sports & Rugby Park.
Pontypool showed their strength in the set piece, particularly at the lineout, where their well-drilled catch-and-drive proved decisive. Two tries in that fashion gave the visitors a 12–0 advantage at half-time.
After the break, Cinderford came out with intent and were rewarded when Aaron Ryan powered over for a deserved try, raising the noise levels around the ground. However, Pontypool responded with another drive-based score and sealed the result with a fourth try in the dying moments.
Despite the result, there was clear encouragement for Cinderford heading into the season ahead.
Head coach Clive reflected on the performance:
“Our most complete performance of pre-season against our strongest opponent. The players delivered on the areas that we worked on in training and took a big step forward within our systems. All players have had an opportunity to show what they can do over the past 3 competitive weeks. We now move into our league campaigns and expect training to reflect this.”
With pre-season now complete, Cinderford turn their attention to the league campaign, boosted by confidence in both their systems and the squad’s progression.
