Smiths 35 – 19 Cinderford U16s

Cinderford RFC Under-16s produced a determined performance during their trip to Cheltenham on Sunday morning, eventually going down 35–19 against a strong Smiths side.

Despite several late withdrawals leaving Cinderford with a travelling squad of 18 players, the visitors showed plenty of commitment, particularly during a spirited second-half fightback.

Playing into a strong wind during the opening half, Cinderford made an encouraging start, putting together several good phases of play before Olli Evans crossed out wide for the opening try. Jai Parry followed with an excellent conversion from a difficult angle to give the visitors an early advantage.

However, the home side responded strongly, taking control of proceedings as Cinderford struggled to maintain their early momentum. Smiths capitalised on this period, crossing for five tries to establish a commanding lead.

Cinderford regrouped and began to find their rhythm again in the second half, producing some of their best rugby of the morning.

Evans was once again amongst the points, crossing for his second try of the match before adding an impressive conversion from the touchline to reduce the deficit.

With confidence growing, Cinderford began to enjoy more possession and territory. A powerful break through the middle from Tyler G carried play deep into the Smiths 22, setting up another promising attacking opportunity.

The visitors maintained possession through several phases before Tyler crashed over for a well-worked team try, rewarding the collective efforts of the Cinderford players.

The strong wind continued to influence proceedings, with the ball blowing off the kicking tee as Cinderford prepared for the conversion. Evans attempted a drop-kick from out wide but narrowly missed the target.

Although Smiths ultimately secured a 35–19 victory, Cinderford could take encouragement from their response after a difficult spell in the opening half.

The visitors demonstrated determination and teamwork, with all 18 players contributing to a much-improved second-half display against strong opposition.

Man of the Match was awarded to Ollie Weaver, whose relentless tackling and tireless work across the pitch made him a standout performer for Cinderford.

The squad and coaching team will now look to build on the positives from the performance as they continue their season.
