Cinderford United 25 – 16 Gordon League
Cinderford United returned to winning ways with a hard-earned 25–16 victory over Gordon League at Bell Sports & Rugby Park on Saturday, producing a determined second-half performance despite challenging weather conditions.
With a strong wind playing a significant part in proceedings, both sides had to adapt their approach throughout a competitive afternoon.
United made the opening breakthrough with Charlie Stallard, who crossed for the first try of the match to give the home side a 5–0 advantage.
Gordon League responded with an unconverted try to level the scores at 5–5, but Stallard was soon back amongst the points, successfully kicking two penalties to put United 11–5 ahead.
The visitors reduced the deficit with a penalty of their own before the interval, leaving United with a slender 11–8 lead at half-time.
Gordon League made a positive start to the second half, kicking another penalty to bring the scores level at 11–11.
However, it was United who produced the decisive response, finding their best rugby of the afternoon while playing into the strong wind.
Dan Nicholls crossed for United’s second try, with Stallard adding the conversion to restore the home side’s advantage at 18–11.
United continued to build on their momentum, and Sam Baker was next to get on the scoresheet, crossing for another try. Matt Tinker added the conversion to extend the lead to 25–11.
Gordon League continued to compete and were rewarded with an unconverted try, reducing the deficit to nine points. However, United had done enough to secure a valuable 25–16 victory.
The result was a welcome boost for United, particularly following a second-half performance that demonstrated resilience and determination in difficult conditions.
United manager Paul Morris was pleased with his side’s efforts, particularly after the interval.
“The result was a much-needed boost for the United before an away match against league leaders Dings Knights next Saturday. Conditions were difficult, with the wind a prominent factor. We won the game because our best play came in the second half whilst playing into the strong wind.
“We were worthy winners because of our second-half efforts, but Gordon League played their part. They are well coached and highly motivated.
“We look forward to the challenge before us next Saturday and know where we have to improve if we are to succeed. We are in a better place due to our performance on Saturday.”
United now turn their attention to next Saturday’s trip to league leaders Dings Knights, where they will be hoping to build on this encouraging result.
