Dan “Chippy” Nicholls will reach a special milestone this Saturday, making his 150th appearance for Cinderford United as he captains the side against Old Redcliffians 2nds.

Fittingly, the game takes place at The Bridge—the ground where his United journey began in October 2015. Ahead of the occasion, Paul Morris pays tribute to a player whose commitment to Cinderford RFC has never been in doubt.

A tribute from Paul Morris

“This Saturday, Dan ‘Chippy’ Nicholls will make his 150th United appearance. He made his debut in October 2015 as a replacement scrum-half at The Bridge against Richmond. A one-club man, he has played in Minor, Junior and Senior Cup finals for his beloved club.

“He has played in one National One league game for the 1st XV, at home to Rams, in a game that directly preceded the cessation of rugby due to the pandemic. Dan denies responsibility for this!

“There have been more skilful and talented players to represent Cinderford over the last decade, but few, if any, can match his commitment, dedication, resilience and passion for Cinderford RFC. Dan exudes the old-fashioned virtues of playing rugby to give and enjoy—not to take. His courage has seen him overcome several serious injuries to continue playing. Nobody can ever question his courage.

“Dan deserves all the plaudits he should rightly receive. However, it’s likely that Dan’s main focus and desire on Saturday will be for a United win whilst captaining a youthful United side against a good Old Redcliffians outfit—back at The Bridge, where it all started.

“Thank you, Dan.”
